Sonja heard the audience question through her headphones and prepared a translation. A woman asked why local participants weren't allowed to discuss their own projects. The host, Igor, waited several seconds, then told the foreign guest the audience wanted to know how much she liked the city. Sonja lowered her pencil. She was hired to interpret the guest's answers, while Igor handled questions himself, claiming that made conversation flow more naturally.
The discussion belonged to a small cultural festival Igor had organized for years. Sonja was his partner and had agreed to work there for the first time under a clearly arranged professional engagement. She knew criticism from local participants made him nervous. She hadn't known he would turn their language into a filter admitting only praise. The guest sincerely answered that the city was lovely, while the woman in the audience remained confused.
The next question concerned a canceled workshop. Igor again transformed it into a general remark about young people's interest. Sonja quietly said that wasn't what had been asked. Over the microphone, he explained that the interpreter might not have heard properly. Several audience members nodded, ready to accept a technical problem instead of deliberate redirection. Sonja felt her work becoming cover for his decision.
She requested the microphone and repeated the original question in both languages. She didn't accuse the guest or attempt to take over the entire discussion. She explained that the previous answer hadn't addressed the question because it hadn't been conveyed. The guest immediately requested both earlier questions again. Igor tried discussing limited time, but the audience now waited for the woman invited specifically to speak with them.
The guest hadn't known about the workshop's cancellation and was willing to stay longer. She couldn't resolve every organizational failure, but the discussion finally acquired real substance. Afterwards, Igor said Sonja had embarrassed him. She replied that he first publicly attributed a mistake to her that she hadn't made. She requested a correction alongside the recording because those present weren't its only future audience.
The correction appeared. Sonja declined another engagement until someone else oversaw the discussion, and ended her relationship with Igor after several attempts at serious conversation. For months, he claimed he had merely protected the atmosphere. She didn't want to live in an atmosphere where her words could change for his peace. At the next discussion, she sat in the audience. After asking a question, she listened to the full translation and, for the first time that evening, calmly lowered her pencil.
