Several years earlier Marta learned an unusual savory pastry from women in the village where she spent her childhood. Each family used its own measure of spices, while the shared method passed through working gatherings without grand secrets or claims of belonging to one person. Marta made it for friends. She never presented it as her invention.

Her husband Bojan ran a small restaurant. For its anniversary he announced a dinner featuring "a secret recipe from his wife's family," planning later to sell the pastries packaged. Marta learned when a waiter brought the new menu for approval. A photograph of her hands filled the cover. Bojan had taken it during ordinary Sunday cooking, saying he liked watching her work.

Marta asked him to change the announcement. The recipe was not his family property, and she had not agreed to become a product's face. Bojan said the village women always maintained food was made for sharing. She replied that sharing knowledge differed from inventing exclusive ownership. What especially bothered her was his having already imagined his profit as their shared happiness.

Dinner was scheduled for tomorrow. Bojan claimed there was no time. Marta said there was time for a new menu, even a simpler one. She refused to prepare the pastries under a false story. She hid no ingredients and sabotaged no kitchen. She offered a clear option: present the food accurately, without her photograph or promises about an unagreed product.

Before the guests Bojan still attempted the old introduction. Marta, sitting with two village women, stood and introduced them. She said she had learned from them and tonight they should explain the dish. She had not exposed them without asking; they discussed it before coming. One calmly described the method, including that there was no single secret recipe. Guests listened more closely than to Bojan's prepared speech.

The sales plan was postponed. Later the women who wished to participate arranged paid workshops under their names and terms. Marta did not join every one. At home she and Bojan continued discussing why he thought her closeness to people was a resource he could control. The restaurant remained open. Its new menu held no secret, only an accurate description and the names of those who had agreed to have their knowledge served with dinner.
